M15. Ultrasound Tomography and Inverse Problems

Ultrasound tomography (UST), is gaining momentum in many fields, including industrial and medical imaging. In terms of inverse problems, the UST inverse problem is one of the most exciting types of inverse problems. The UST can be treated either as soft-field or hard-field tomography, and on its own it can be multi-modality tomography. Unlike the traditional ultrasound imaging, the UST makes use of rich data from multiple transducers surrounding the object of interest. In particular tranmission mode UST can image the speed of sound and/or sound attenuation within the object. While the practitioners make use of many simplifying assumptions to make the UST a robust and practical device, the full wave inversion (FWI) is the gold standard method for inverse solution in UST. There are some great open-source tools that can help with the FWI. For real-time applications, the FWI might still be a challenge in computational complexity and time. The ray tracing methods are fast and easy to implement, making simplifying assumptions regarding the ultrasound wave propagation. With advanced inversion tools, similar to that of iterative reconstruction tools in XCT, the ray-based methods may work well for real-time practical applications. Similar to the traditional ultrasound imaging, the UST lends itself very well to the data-driven and ML-based reconstruction methods.

This mini-symposium will investigate all aspects of the UST inverse problems from a theoretical point of view as well as the practical aspects.
