M18. Recent Progress in the Variational Optimization Approach and the Finite Element Method for the Solution of Inverse Problems

The purpose of this symposium is to provide a forum for academic discussions related to the recent progress in the application of the variational optimization approach and finite element/difference methods for solving inverse problems in different applied fields. The session aims to be a place for interaction between theoretical and practical researchers, as well as between senior and young minds in the field.

We encourage the young and senior researchers working in both theoretical and applied areas to submit the papers for this session. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to,

  • application of the variational optimization approach for the solution of inverse and ill-posed problems;
  • application of finite element/difference methods for solution of inverse problems;
  • new numerical methods and algorithms with applications in microwave medical imaging;
  • the use of internal measurements which play an important role in detection encountered in tomography, imaging, and photoacoustics;
  • control methods allowing to retrieve sources in the parabolic and hyperbolic PDE;
  • inverse problems of higher-order systems of PDEs;
  • inverse conductivity problems (mostly treated with Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps).
